Indigenous Issues

Nearly 44% of the Northern Territory is Aboriginal land under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) and a further 45% of the Northern Territory is held under pastoral lease which admits the continued existence of native title rights and interests. All land types (including the 1.7% freehold) may be subject to either sacred site or archaeological or heritage issues.
Because of our high level of involvement in the mining and resources industry, the pastoral industry, major projects and infrastructure we have an intimate knowledge of issues related to native title rights and interests, Aboriginal land issues, sacred sites and heritage protection laws and procedures.
Ward Keller can advise on the relevant laws and their requirements, provide advice on processes available to achieve outcomes and to negotiate and prepare relevant agreements.
Our long history in the Territory means that we are generally aware of the relevant background to issues, and this can be important when considering strategic planning in commercial ventures. As a Territory firm, our people are familiar and have good working relationships with, the organisations representing indigenous interests or that administer the relevant legislation.
