Lawyer Liam Kelly moved to Darwin from Newcastle, New South Wales, for his new role with Ward Keller in March 2018. He studied a double degree in law and arts at the University of Newcastle.
Liam practises in Ward Keller’s mining and resources cell in Darwin. ‘It’s really interesting and not like anything I’ve experienced before’, he said. ‘It’s such a varied practice.
‘I’ve been working mostly on native title and land rights matters so far’, he said. ‘I’ve always been interested in that area but wasn’t sure how I’d be able to put it into practice. I’d never get this sort of opportunity in Newcastle.
‘I had my heart set on criminal law when I first started studying, but I did a placement with a solicitor doing employment law, which I found interesting, so I’d like to try that down the track too.’
Liam says his new Ward Keller team is very supportive. ‘I can’t believe they’ve put up with all my questions!’ he said. ‘They’re all really good people here.’
Outside work, Liam plays cricket and has been involved in the surf club and water-based sports all his life, which he’s looking to get back into in Darwin.
